Vocal Remover: the vocal remover studio

Remove the vocals from a song: choose a song, hear the instrumental and the acapella on the desk, pick the lamp you like best, then download WAV or MP3.

Vocal Remover gives you two tracks from a finished song: the instrumental, with the vocals taken out, and the vocals on their own, often called the acapella. You hear both on the desk before you download anything, pick the sound you like best, then download one track or both.

How it works

  1. Open Vocal Remover and press Choose a song, or drop a song on the desk
  2. Wait a moment while the previews are made
  3. Press play and listen to the 30-second clip
  4. Light LYRA, VEGA, ORION or NOVA under MODEL, and keep the one your ears prefer
  5. Use the faders, SOLO and MUTE to hear each track on its own
  6. Choose WAV or MP3 under FORMAT, then press Download on a track, or Download both

Opening Vocal Remover

Sign in, open the studio picker and press Remove the vocals on the Vocal Remover card. You can also start on the Vocal Remover page: its button reads Remove the vocals, or Open Vocal Remover when you are signed in. The desk is made for a computer; on a phone, it asks you to open the page on a desktop or a laptop.

The desk reads from left to right: 01 INPUT on the left, 02 OVERVIEW and 03 CHANNELS in the middle, and 04 EXPORT on the right.

Choosing a song

In 01 INPUT, press Choose a song or From library. Both open Add audio: pick a song you already have under From library, or add a new one under Upload. You can also drop a song straight onto the desk, where it says or drop a song here. A song is an MP3 or WAV of 30 seconds to 10 minutes, up to 200 MB.

The song's name then shows at the top of the desk, and it stays on the desk if you reload the page. To work on another song, press Choose a song again.

Waiting for the previews

As soon as a song is on the desk, its previews are made: a 30-second clip of the song, ready to hear with each of the MODEL lamps. They are made together and are ready together, after a short wait. Meanwhile the overview shows Getting your tracks ready and how far it has got, and the MODEL lamps blink with the same percent. When other songs are ahead of yours, it reads IN LINE until your turn comes.

You can leave the page while you wait. Pick the song again later and its tracks open. When the previews are ready, the lamp at the top of the desk reads PREVIEWS READY and LYRA is lit.

Listening to the clip

The transport sits in the 02 OVERVIEW title row: back 10 seconds, play and pause, forward 10 seconds, LOOP and the time. Press play to hear the clip. The time runs through its 30 seconds, and with LOOP on the clip plays round and round, which makes comparing easy. The overview's status line says where the clip sits in the song, for example 30-SECOND CLIP FROM 1:12.

The overview draws the clip as two lanes, VOCALS on top and INSTRUMENTAL underneath, with the playhead running across them. Click anywhere on it to jump to that moment.

Choosing a sound: LYRA, VEGA, ORION or NOVA

Above the channels, the MODEL lamps read LYRA, VEGA, ORION and NOVA. Each one gives the same clip its own sound. Press a lamp to light it and the clip switches at once, at the same moment, playing or paused as it was, so you can flip between them while you listen.

Pick by ear. SOLO the vocals to judge the acapella, MUTE them to judge the instrumental, and keep the lamp you like best. There is no right answer: every song is different, so try them all. Downloads follow the lamp lit here until you light a lamp for a track under EXPORT MODELS, in 04 EXPORT.

The channels: faders, SOLO and MUTE

03 CHANNELS holds a strip for each track, VOCALS and INSTRUMENTAL, and each strip has a fader, a level meter, SOLO, MUTE and its own Download key. Every change is heard at once.

ControlWhat it does
FaderHow loud the track plays on the desk. It changes what you hear while you listen, never the files you download
SOLOPlays that track alone: SOLO on VOCALS plays the acapella. While a track is soloed, the top of 03 CHANNELS reads SOLO ON
MUTESilences that track: MUTE on VOCALS plays the instrumental
DownloadDownloads that track on its own, in its lamp under EXPORT MODELS and the format chosen under FORMAT

Downloading

  1. Light the lamp you want under MODEL
  2. In 04 EXPORT, check the VOCALS and INSTRUMENTAL rows under EXPORT MODELS
  3. Choose WAV or MP3 under FORMAT
  4. Press Download on the VOCALS or the INSTRUMENTAL strip for one track, or Download both for the two together in one ZIP

EXPORT MODELS has a VOCALS row and an INSTRUMENTAL row, each with LYRA, VEGA, ORION and NOVA. Both rows follow the lamp you light under MODEL until you light a lamp in a row; a row you have lit keeps its own lamp. Every download uses these rows: the Download key on each strip and Download both. So you can take the vocals from one lamp and the instrumental from another.

A download is always the whole song, not the clip. When the whole song is not yet prepared in a lamp the download needs, it is prepared first: the screen in 02 OVERVIEW shows how far it has got, for example Preparing ORION: 42%, and the download starts by itself when it is ready. Keep Vocal Remover open until it starts. After that, downloads of the song in that lamp start straight away, in WAV or MP3.

FormatWhat you getBest for
WAV24-bit, 44.1 kHzRemixes, covers, mixing and video
MP3320 kbpsPractice, sharing and a karaoke night
The files are named after the song and the lamp. For a song called Midnight, in WAV, with LYRA on the VOCALS row and ORION on the INSTRUMENTAL row: Midnight - Vocals (LYRA).wav and Midnight - Instrumental (ORION).wav, and Download both puts the two in Midnight - Vocals and Instrumental.zip.

Making a karaoke video of the song

Your song is already in your LimePulse library. In Karaoke, pick it under From library, with nothing to upload again. Karaoke takes the song as you uploaded it, whichever lamp is lit here.

Do I need a plan?

Not to listen at first. Without a plan you can hear the previews of up to 3 different songs, with every lamp, as often as you like: opening one of them again does not count twice. After those, a new song shows A plan is needed for this song, with See plans, and the MODEL lamps read PLAN.

Downloads are part of the Creator plan. Without one, each Download key and Download both open the plans, in a window headed Download your tracks, and a line in 04 EXPORT says Downloads need a plan, with See plans beside it.

A new account can start before its email is confirmed: the previews of your first song are made straight away, and a Confirm your email line with Send it again sits under the song card. Another song shows Confirm your email to hear this song until you open the link in the email we sent; then that song starts on its own.

Questions

Should I download WAV or MP3?

WAV for anything you will keep working on: a remix, a cover you are recording or a video. It is 24-bit, 44.1 kHz, the higher quality and the larger file. MP3, at 320 kbps, is small and plays anywhere, which suits practice, sharing and a karaoke night.

Why does a lamp sound different on another song?

Every song is different: the voice, the instruments and the mix all change what you hear. The lamp you liked best on one song may not be the best on the next, so try them all on every song and keep the one your ears prefer.

Can I hear the whole song before I download it?

The desk plays a 30-second clip of the song, so you can compare the lamps quickly. The download is always the whole song, prepared in the lamp lit for that track under EXPORT MODELS.

Can I use any song?

You can take the vocals out of any song you upload, but the vocals and the instrumental still belong to the people who wrote and recorded the song. Publish covers, remixes and edits made with them only of your own songs, of songs you have licensed, or of songs whose owners allow it.
