The families of look
- Linear bars: the classic spectrum, wide and readable, good for almost anything
- Mirrored and centred bars: symmetrical, good when artwork sits in the middle
- Circular and radial: a corona around the cover, good for ambient and electronic
- Waveform: the real shape of the sound rather than its frequencies, good for spoken word and acoustic
- Swells and fields: soft, centred motion that is flat at silence, good for slow music
Which suits my genre?
There is no rule, but there are tendencies: heavy bass rewards bars that move a long way, ambient rewards forms that breathe rather than jump, and spoken word reads better on a waveform than on a spectrum.
